5 Steps to Finding Wisdom

Proverbs 8:22-23
The Lord brought me (wisdom) forth as the first of his works,
before his deeds of old;
I was appointed from eternity, from the beginning,
before the world began.

Wow! If even the almighty God sought wisdom before setting out on the creation of the world and all mankind, what makes us think that we shouldn't seek wisdom before all of the decisions that face us each day?

Wisdom is out there for the taking. The problem for many of us, however, is that we won't look to wisdom until everything around us has fallen completely apart. Verse 17 of the same chapter says "those who seek me (wisdom) find me." I believe if we all put more effort into our thought process before making decisions, we will have much more favorable outcomes. Too often we rush into things without taking the time to think things all the way through. Then, we sulk about the consequences, which actually are usually avoidable.

Here's a few steps you might want to take before making your next life altering decision. (NOTE: Life altering doesn't have to be something huge like who you'll marry. We've all made smaller decisions that have changed our lives forever!)

Step 1: Let anyone who may be pressuring you for an answer know you need X amount of time to make a decision.

Step 2: Pray about it.

Step 3: Think about the best and worst case scenario.

Step 4: See all of your options written out on paper. (My husband and I like to use the dry erase board.)

Step 5: Seek wise counsel. (Usually someone trustworthy who has experience in the area.)

If you go through these steps, you're guaranteed to make a much wiser decision than you may have made otherwise! And if things still don't work out to your liking, at least you know that you weighed the costs and you have no regrets that concern you being irrational!
