First, the Joneses; now, the Kardashians! Thanks to reality TV, we actually have faces to put with the folks that we, as a culture, are constantly striving to reach as our benchmark for success. Even if your benchmark has nothing to do with Kim, Khloe or Kourtney, if you keep it real, there's probably someone out there you've been trying to compete with. My question to you is, "How much is striving for this material wealth costing you?"
Is it that $1000 purse? What about the lavish island vacations and shopping sprees in Las Vegas? Whatever it is, if you have NO money to put in your Fendi bag and return home to utility notices, then keeping up with others can be costing you both financially and eventually emotionally. As a personal finance coach, I teach my clients that life is about discipline, not deprivation. I'm all for enjoying the the better things in life, as long as the basic things in life are taken care of first.
Life is not about keeping up with the Joneses, the Kardashians or anyone else. We were all brought here with individual passions to pursue and purposes to fulfill. Use the example and success of others to be a guide for where you want to go, but don't let it define you. And most impoartantly, don't chase what the Kardashians have, unless you're willing to do what they've done! Remember, the only place you'll find success before work, is in the dictionary. Whether you respect it or not, they had to do something to become a household name!
